One of the biggest mindset shifts I have made over the last few years is modifying my language to reflect how I want to feel.
On the suggestion of my coach, I made two major changes. I started saying AND in the place of BUT, and GET TO in the place of HAVE TO.
You see, all the things we have to do are a choice. And often, when we make this language shift, we can be grateful instead of resentful.
For example, instead of saying, "I have to dust the house," which brings up feelings that make it seem like such an overwhelming chore that I will procrastinate and then feel bad that I didn't get done...I can say, "I get to dust."
When I say, "I get to dust," it reminds me that I am physically able to do the task. That I will enjoy the cleaner environment, and it will give me a chance to move around and take a break from other things.
How Does this Relate to How We Feel About our Bodies?
When it comes to our bodies and food, these can be helpful shifts to make. Instead of, "I have to lose weight," or "I have to start eating healthy," What if you said, "I get to?" How does that shift the feeling?
Which sounds more hopeful, loving, and doable?
I want to lose weight, but I don't want to stop eating dessert.
I want to lose weight and I don't want to stop eating dessert.
The first sounds like you're already defeated, like it will be hard and you don't really want to do to even try.
The second sounds like it won't be all or nothing. That I can still enjoy myself and work toward my goal. That I can have pleasure and results.
Such a simple little adjustment, but profound change in meaning, and feeling.
BUT and HAVE TO put us toward being in victim mode, vaguely placing blame on others, society, etc...making us seem like we don't have a choice; like it's out of our control.
This is where we get ourselves in trouble and staying in that frame of mind permeates everything else we do, our relationships, and how we view our lives as a whole.
I want to travel, but I have to save up money first.
I hate my job but I don't know what else I am qualified to do.
This country is going to hell in a handbasket but we can't trust anyone to turn it around.
These statements sound so defeatist, so glum, so hopeless. That's the feeling we are projecting onto our whole lives. It takes our power away when we talk like this.
We shift the responsibility to others, to later, to anyone but us, any time but now. The more we talk like this, the less we trust ourselves to do what needs to be done. We put off doing anything for fear we can't overcome this state of mind...and we will fail.
AND...
We DO have the power to shift our perspective.
Our thoughts and feelings DO matter.
Our outcomes ARE affected by how we think about ourselves and how we speak.
Weight loss IS sustainable.
We DESERVE to love the bodies we have while we work toward the bodies we desire.
We GET TO shift the focus from our bodies looking the way we think they should...to expanding ourselves to whom we want to be, and how we want to show up and impact the world...and have weight loss and self-acceptance and general badassery be happy side effects.
